Can drinking good healthy water help us enjoy better health?

Isn’t it a strange paradox - much of the developing world is suffering from diseases due to not having access to clean healthy water. Yet the developed world population is suffering from a plague of modern diseases extensively contributed to by their failure to drink adequate amounts of clean healthy water. They have been brainwashed to believe that they can drink any fluid and it will meet the body’s hydration needs. Unfortunately that is not the case.

Dehydration is implicated in many if not all of our modern diseases. For many years it was believed that water was just a solvent to carry nutrients and was just filling the spaces between the solid matter in our body. However leading scientists and some doctors are beginning to realise that its role is much more extensive and much more important.

Stroud Council wins eco-friendly award

Stroud District Council has won the 2010 Green Energy Award for being the south west's Most Proactive Local Authority, at the South West Green Energy Awards.

The award – which is designed to recognise the crucial role local authorities can play in supporting sustainable energy – was presented to the council at a ceremony, held at the Bath Assembly Rooms.

Head judge of the category, Dermot Grimson of the Crown Estate, said: "Stroud is increasingly seeing things happen 'on the ground'. There has been tremendous improvement in the district over the past 12 months, and its model is an exemplar to all smaller local authorities."

The council was particularly noted for its three-year Climate Change Programme "Target 2050", which has helped over 180 householders, 66 businesses and 20 community buildings to reduce their CO2 emissions. Their 'cross tenure' project in an off-gas area has delivered 48 renewable heating solutions, and their involvement in the 'DECC PAYS' pilot finances tailored local solutions with local suppliers and installers.

National Trust museum generates its own income

The National Trust's carriage museum at Arlington Court is now generating its own income following one of the UK's largest installations of photo-voltaic (PV) cells on a historic building.

The 113 m2 installation near Barnstaple in Devon will generate up to 6.3 megawatt hours (mWh) of energy each year, saving the museum about £600 from its electricity bill and generating income of around £2,270 per year by feeding energy back into the grid.

£860 million Funding for Renewables Including Ground Source Heat Pumps

Big news for the Ground Source Heat Pump Industry: the Government last week confirmed that the Renewable Heat Incentive will be launched in June 2011. £860 million of funding, over the spending review period, will be provided from DECC’s own budget and not through the levy on energy companies as originally planned by Labour. This is still a substantial amount of funding which has been welcomed by Kensa Heat Pumps and the Renewable Heat Industry.

DECC says this will drive a more-than-tenfold increase of renewable heat over the coming decade, "shifting renewable heat from a fringe industry firmly into the mainstream".

Solar power for National Trust museum

npower has reported that one of the UK’s largest installations of photo-voltaic (PV) cells on a historic building has been fitted to the roof of the National Trust's carriage museum at Arlington Court near Barnstaple in Devon.

The 113 m2 installation will generate up to 6.3 megawatt hours (mWh) of energy each year, saving the museum about £600 from its electricity bill and generating income of around £2,270 per year by feeding energy back into the grid.

IEA report "lacks poor person's perspective"

International development charity, Practical Action, has today criticised the IEA’s influential World Energy Outlook report (WEO) for lacking insight in suggesting that the problem of energy access can be solved by energy companies alone.

The annual WEO report, has this year included an entire chapter on energy poverty which is the result of long-term lobbying for the importance of energy access for developing countries to be recognised by decision-makers around the world, something Practical Action played a significant role in.

However, the charity claims the IEA report’s figures are too low, citing the percentage of people that are energy poor at just 20%, where Practical Action’s report recognises that half of the world’s population currently has no access to modern energy of any kind.

Eco Products to Reduce Heating Bills

The recession is leading to a surge in demand for products that help householders reduce their heating bills and make homes less draughty, according to one of the UK’s leading eco-retailers.

Nigel Berman, founder of www.nigelsecostore.com , says a smart gadget which helps radiators work more efficiently is the company’s best seller.

He said: “Radiator boosters use a small fan to capture heat lost out of the back of the radiator, circulating it better into the room, and can reduce room heating time and bills by up to 10% - all for a running cost of about 30p a year. They are adjustable, have a built in thermostat and could save an average household from £70 to £140 per year. Products like letter-box eco flaps are also selling well.

“We've found that an increasing number of people are thinking about energy saving and how they can reduce household bills, by investing in innovative products. The added bonus is that these products also have a positive benefit on the environment and cut back on waste.”

As the cold weather sets in, here are four tips from Nigel that will help people stay warmer this winter and reduce their carbon footprint:

Increase savings with energy saving technology

With the clocks due to go back this Sunday (31st October), the ECA offers householders practical steps to saving money and energy this winter with their Energy Saving Guide. These ideas, when combined, can save households £400 a year.

The ECA’s resident expert on energy saving, Head of Technical Services, Giuliano Digilio, says: “When it comes to energy saving, it’s the little things that can add up in the householder’s favour.

“When putting the clocks back this October think about taking a few simple and relatively inexpensive steps, which can be financially rewarding, particularly in the face of energy price hikes over the next few years. It’s a perfect opportunity to make relatively quick savings at this traditionally expensive time of year”, he said.

Environmentally friendly matchmaking

PARSHIP goes green: PARSHIP, the leading online matchmaker in Germany and across Europe has migrated completely its IT infrastructure to a CO2-neutral solution: in September it received NTT Europe’s Carbon Neutral Hosting certification. This new hosting solution came about in the context of PARSHIP’s change of its service provider to NTT Europe. Beyond the primary benefits to the environment, the Hamburg-based online company expects to gain numerous advantages in terms of perception and commercial performance.

PARSHIP’s reduction in CO2 emissions was achieved through a new virtualisation concept. With the migration to a hosting solution at NTT for the PARSHIP services in Germany and 13 other countries, the energy efficiency could be sustainably improved while simultaneously reducing running costs. “We are estimating an energy saving of more than 50 % for each PARSHIP member,” says Dr Walter Sinowski, Chief Technology Officer of PARSHIP. “Beyond that, the server consolidation increases our flexibility. From now on, we won’t need to resort to additional hardware to provide extra capacity for peak times such as weekends. That means we are saving on energy – and costs.”

Largest UK ferry "one of the most evironmentally friendly"

Stena Line owned Stena Britannica, the largest UK-registered ferry, has completed a successful first sailing out of British waters after its recent voyage from Harwich. The Stena Britannica, the British-flagged ferry with the largest dimensions in terms of both volume and length, left Harwich for a six-hour crossing to the Hook of Holland at 09.00 on 10th October 2010.

At just over 64.000 gross tonnage, the North Sea Superferry is larger than any other under the British flag, including Stena Line's own Stena Adventurer.

The Stena Britannica's maximum length is 240m which dwarves other British-registered ferries and is 2.4 times the height of the Big Ben clock tower.

Despite her size the ferry is also currently one of the most environmentally friendly operating out of the UK, thanks to catalytic converters; improved combustion engines; recycling systems for glass, cardboard and food and radiant heat-blocking solar film windows.

New metal recycling facility

A licensed scrap metal recycling facility that can handle anything from individual deliveries of a few kilos to individual consignments of 50 metric tonnes will be opened by the Mayor of Darlington tomorrow (October 14th) as part of a strategic plan for North East England.

Councillor Bryan Thistlethwaite will be invited to open the new European Metal Recycling (EMR) site on Cleveland Trading Estate by severing a chain with metal cutters instead of performing the conventional ribbon cutting ceremony.

The Mayor will then be invited to step into a brand new on-site crane and handle the first consignment of scrap into the new site on Forge Way, and will see the start of the process and the end product – the recycled
material.

The Mayor said: “It is excellent that this facility has come to Darlington. It will help both residents and businesses recycle their waste and not only get financial reward for doing so but also help save the environment. I wish this company every success”

Low quality flooring uses three-year-old bamboo, which is soft and scratches easily.' said Steven Wang, President of Mr. Bamboo, Inc. 'It's a poor choice for homes with dogs or commercial applications. Our bamboo flooring is harvested at 5 or 6 years, then strand woven to increase hardness,' he continued. Eco-friendly bag ditched after "noisy" complaint

This is ridiculous. Frito-Lay, who manufacture Sun Chips, have gone back to a non-biodegradable bag after consumers said that the new compostable bag was too noisy. In fairness, Frito-Lay are committed to using compostable bags, but it just seems crazy that people who eat these snacks would rather have a quiet bag that damages the environment than a noisy one that will go back to nature.

How noisy can a bag be, anyway?
