National Trust museum generates its own income

The National Trust's carriage museum at Arlington Court is now generating its own income following one of the UK's largest installations of photo-voltaic (PV) cells on a historic building.

The 113 m2 installation near Barnstaple in Devon will generate up to 6.3 megawatt hours (mWh) of energy each year, saving the museum about £600 from its electricity bill and generating income of around £2,270 per year by feeding energy back into the grid.

Light bulb manufacturer calls for mercury ban

Megaman, one of the world's largest manufacturers of energy saving light bulbs, has called for an international ban on unsafe bulbs which contain mercury in liquid form. The company, whose entire range of lighting products are free of liquid mercury, says that consumer safety is currently being compromised by lax regulations which allow inferior – and potentially hazardous - products to be sold through shops and Internet retailers. The company is actively lobbying at the EU in Brussels and in other European countries.

£860 million Funding for Renewables Including Ground Source Heat Pumps

Big news for the Ground Source Heat Pump Industry: the Government last week confirmed that the Renewable Heat Incentive will be launched in June 2011. £860 million of funding, over the spending review period, will be provided from DECC’s own budget and not through the levy on energy companies as originally planned by Labour. This is still a substantial amount of funding which has been welcomed by Kensa Heat Pumps and the Renewable Heat Industry.

DECC says this will drive a more-than-tenfold increase of renewable heat over the coming decade, "shifting renewable heat from a fringe industry firmly into the mainstream".

IEA report "lacks poor person's perspective"

International development charity, Practical Action, has today criticised the IEA’s influential World Energy Outlook report (WEO) for lacking insight in suggesting that the problem of energy access can be solved by energy companies alone.

The annual WEO report, has this year included an entire chapter on energy poverty which is the result of long-term lobbying for the importance of energy access for developing countries to be recognised by decision-makers around the world, something Practical Action played a significant role in.

However, the charity claims the IEA report’s figures are too low, citing the percentage of people that are energy poor at just 20%, where Practical Action’s report recognises that half of the world’s population currently has no access to modern energy of any kind.

Eco Products to Reduce Heating Bills

The recession is leading to a surge in demand for products that help householders reduce their heating bills and make homes less draughty, according to one of the UK’s leading eco-retailers.

Nigel Berman, founder of www.nigelsecostore.com , says a smart gadget which helps radiators work more efficiently is the company’s best seller.

He said: “Radiator boosters use a small fan to capture heat lost out of the back of the radiator, circulating it better into the room, and can reduce room heating time and bills by up to 10% - all for a running cost of about 30p a year. They are adjustable, have a built in thermostat and could save an average household from £70 to £140 per year. Products like letter-box eco flaps are also selling well.

“We've found that an increasing number of people are thinking about energy saving and how they can reduce household bills, by investing in innovative products. The added bonus is that these products also have a positive benefit on the environment and cut back on waste.”

As the cold weather sets in, here are four tips from Nigel that will help people stay warmer this winter and reduce their carbon footprint:
