Wind power to double around the world

Global wind power capacity is expected to double by 2014, and emerging economies are playing an increasing role in that expansion, the Global Wind Energy Council said Thursday.

The world's installed wind power capacity is expected to reach close to 200 gigawatts by the end of 2010, and double to more than 400 GW between 2010 and 2014, the council said in a release.

Growth currently is driven by China, the U.S. and Europe, but new countries are appearing on the global wind map.

"We're seeing very encouraging signs from countries in Latin America, including Brazil, Mexico and Chile, as well as Northern and Sub-Saharan Africa," Steve Sawyer, the council's secretary general, is quoted as saying at a trade fair in northern Germany.

The council plans to present a report at a conference in Beijing in October with scenarios showing how the industry could further expand to reach a capacity of 1,000 GW by 2020, and as much as 2,300 GW by 2030.
